Open the camera and the mandala settles over your room. Turn slowly until North lines up, then lock it in.
- Stand where you can see the whole room and hold the phone flat — screen up, like a plate. The compass reads best level, not tilted up.
- Keep clear of laptops, speakers, metal furniture and switchboards — they pull the needle off true north. If the reading jitters, wave the phone in a slow figure-8 to recalibrate.
- Turn your whole body slowly until the compass N points along the wall that faces north. Not sure which wall is north? It's the side that never gets direct sun; the direction your main door opens also helps you orient.
- When N lines up with your building's north, tap “Lock … as facing”. No compass on this device? Drag the dial by hand until N points north, then lock it.
- Got it wrong? “Rescan” restarts the alignment — only the direction you lock is used in the reading.
